Any signs of life? [Jun. 26th, 2010|04:10 pm]
Venice Carnival
Hello --

Anybody have anything from Carnevale 2010?  I went for the first time this year, and will go again next year.

My question - which of the Balls has the best 18th Century dancing???

Making costumes for myself and my wife.  Inspired in part by Trystan's post below!

Best Wishes!

photos & video from this year's carnevale [Mar. 10th, 2009|10:45 am]
Venice Carnival

[mood |cheerfulcheerful]

I just got back last weekend (we added a U.K. trip after Venice :-), & I finished editing all my photos from a glorious trip to the most magical of cities! Now I know why so many ppl go back for this event *sigh*.

My photos are on Flickr & include lots of maschera around Piazza San Marco, a visit to Antonia Sautter's new costume atelier, a hot chocolate event at Cafe Lavena, the Dolce Vita Ball, the Ballo del Doge (omg, best event I've *ever* been to!!!), plus lots of things around the city & islands.

On this page is a short but hi-rez video preview of the DVD my husband & I will be producing later this year. Features a lot of footage from the Ballo del Doge, which we were privileged to get press passes to. We've interviewed Ms. Sautter before & she is a truly generous & talented artist dedicated to preserving the Carnevale spirit.

And for a little bit of self-indulgence, here's photos & video of the costume I made for Carnevale. It felt so plain & simple in comparison to everything I saw! I really need to bump it up a notch from now on :-D

Anyone going to Carnivale this year?

I'm finally going! My husband, mother, & stepfather arrive on 14 February. We're going to 2 costume events so far -- hot chocolate at Caffe Lavena on Tuesday the 17th & the Dolce Vita Ball on Thursday the 19th (my birthday :-).

Love to hear other ppl's plans, perhaps meet up...

Apartment for 2009 [Oct. 21st, 2008|02:29 pm]
Venice Carnival

After a lot of research, the friends with whom we are going to Venice in February had reserved an apartment for us to share. The location was perfect - very near the Rialto bridge - and the layout and photos of the place made it seem perfect for our group. Unfortunately, our friends just received word that the place now will be unavailable. The owner writes, "there are big restoring works and more there are lack of licenses that compel us to stop with rental for a very long time." Which sounds as though there is some sort of governmental regulatory/licensing at play.

We're not going to panic, as there is still time (we hope) to find another place. But I'm worried that more places may have the same sorts of issues, if indeed it is a governmental 'crackdown' or something like that.

Anyone have any insights? Or recommendations?

Some questions and some pics [Mar. 27th, 2008|09:09 pm]
Venice Carnival

I've been to Venice once for a very short time, and intend to go again when, in the indeterminate future, family circumstances and money (mostly the former) make it possible to travel again.
( I don't intend to make the Carnival the focus of all my (hopefully several) stays in Venice, but, as they say, you only live once. (Anyone know how to say that in Venessian?) So I've accumulated a number of questions to be kept on file for whenever I do get to experience Carnival in Venice. Any answers, or pointers to sites with answers, would be appreciated.
